..because it seems as if the temperature just dropped in here. Oh wait, today is the day that America’s #1 Dick, Mr. Cheney himself, flies into our fair city to get his honorary Doctorate from BYU. Neat.

I find it quite ironic that in the midst of all the protests going on today, it is BYU that opens its arms to our modern-day Mephistopheles. Cheney has brought to our country the promises and spoils of the high and mighty; unbridled consumption and power tell us that we are the greatest nation that has ever graced this planet. But at the zenith of our glory, our nationalism is seen to be nothing but hubris and hegemony, a vanity built on ignoring the black side of Cheney’s world- our nation’s swollen pride built at the expense of our soul- the redaction of the Bill Of Rights and dismantling of the checks and balances that defines our government, the plundering of our national resources, the decimation of our economy to benefit the uber-rich, the squandering of our international reputation.

Here’s to hoping that this passion play ends as Goethe has written it, a deus ex machina sweeping in to save the day. But in the meantime, I’ll be sitting at home, piling on the blankets and waiting for the shadow to depart this fair town, honorary degree or not.
